Exciting. Unexpected. Entertainment. From spoken word to theater, performance art to poetry, and every possible thing in between. Each show is a surprise!
Since its inception as part of the Bloomfield Cabaret Series in 2010, The BEAT Cabaret has provided a creative outlet for many poets, performance artists, musicians and actors.
Using a variety show format, BEAT Impresario Michael McGovern has presented such diverse acts as poets Jenn D and Thomas; performance artists smokifantastic and Kristin Ross; musician Dale Mangold, singers Crystal Lee Morgan and Dessa Poljak (chanteuse from local group Silencio); spoken word artists Ashly Nagrant and Patti Emory; local theater folk like Jen Schaupp as The Log Lady in “The Twin Peaks Show”, Jocelyn Hillen as “Candy Warhol,” and Pittsburgh’s Mad Muse Lori Howsare. Other theater events have featured Yvonne Hudson performing exceprts from her “Mrs Shakespeare” show and the debut of Michael McGovern’s 10 minute play “Preparing Banquo.”
The cabarets are produced two or three times a year by McGovern and Artistic Associates Shawn Karabinos and Richard Carl Nelson, and are performed on the stage at ModernFormations Gallery and Performance Space. The intimacy of this venue allows the audience to get the full effect of the live performances which often leads to a party-like atmosphere after the shows where audience members stay to hang out with the performers.
