Pittsburgh Shakespeare in the Parks

Pittsburgh Shakespeare in the Parks was started in 2005 by Artistic Director Jennifer Tober, a Pittsburgh actress/director who has appeared in The Queens, Macbeth 3, Salome, The Red Shoes, and directed several shows for PSIP. In 2005 Tober was so inspired by the natural amphitheater at the bottom of the sledding hill in Frick Park in Squirrel Hill that she started the company with As You Like It in November 2005. The company grew and gained popularity quickly, and now offers FREE theater in Frick, Mellon, and Kennard parks each autumn.

Tober was approached by an avid fan and radio personality, Kate Borger, about starting a monthly reading group. “We liked the idea right away and immediately one of us came up with the name Bring Your Own Bard, which I think encapsulates exactly what we do. In the city parks, we use only the park as our set, and we tell the story in a very physical way that makes the story immediately clear to the audience. Our emphasis is on the words, and on the unique collaborative relationship among the actors, the language, and the audience,” says Tober.

Pittsburgh Shakespeare in the Parks’ mission: to bring accessible, high quality, free Shakespeare to Pittsburgh Citizens; and to encourage the enjoyment and preservation of our natural public places and parks.

We wish to provide student organizations, and young people with promising talent the opportunity to show their work, create with other artists, network, and enjoy experiences in the theatre that they otherwise may not have.

Pittsburgh Playwrights Theatre Company

Pittsburgh Playwrights Theatre Company was founded by Mark Clayton Southers in 2003. We began as the resident company of Garfield’s Penn Theater, and moved to a 75-seat space at 542 Penn Avenue in the downtown Cultural District in January 2005. In October 2011 we moved again, into the penthouse at 937 Liberty Avenue. Thanks to the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust for finding this exciting new space for us! This space has an elevator and is wheelchair-accessible.

Our Mission: Pittsburgh Playwrights Theatre Company is committed to developing and showcasing the works of local playwrights; from accomplished masters like August Wilson and George S. Kaufman to promising new talents. We seek to nurture a racially and culturally diverse community of playwrights, directors, actors and technical specialists to hone their craft and to network creative opportunities. Finally, we support a racially and culturally diverse management staff and board of directors who, together, promote audiences that reflect the rich variety of our Pittsburgh community. Through such sharing of talents, resources, perspectives and experiences we aspire to provide artistic enlightenment that will strengthen our civic community.

Front Porch Theatricals

Front Porch Theatricals was formed by Bruce E.G. Smith, a local businessman, and Leon S. Zionts, an attorney and actor, for the purpose of mounting a professional production of the locally written and composed musical, Only Me, at East Liberty’s Kelly Strayhorn Theater in April 2009. That endeavor achieved both artistic and financial success. A key component of their success was the very gracious support of their friends, as well as Pittsburgh’s arts foundation community (The Heinz Endowments, The Pittsburgh Foundation and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, among others). Leon then performed in two of Carrnivale Theatrics’ productions in 2010 and 2011 and the opportunity arose to assist the two young producers/directors at Carrnivale Theatrics. Bruce and Leon became co-producers once again in helping to support and mentor Justin Fortunato and Bob Neumeyer in creating something special with Next to Normal in 2012 and In The Heights in 2013.
